Creatinine bestaat uit witte kristallen. Het ontleedt bij verhitting tot 300 °C. Het is oplosbaar in water, licht oplosbaar in alcohol en vrijwel onoplosbaar in ether, aceton en chloroform.

Het wordt ook gebruikt bij de behandeling van acute en chronische hepatitis, cirrose, geelzucht en algemene leveraandoeningen. Daarnaast is het een tussenproduct voor hulpstoffen bij leveraandoeningen.
