4-Hydroxybenzylalcohol is een synthetisch reagens dat gebruikt wordt in de combinatie van californix en streptomycine voor de behandeling van acute myeloïde leukemie. Het speelt een rol in de fenoloxidatie die gekatalyseerd wordt door polyfenoloxidase. Het wordt ook gebruikt voor de bereiding van antimalariamiddelen.
